1. Get hands-on training
Choose a course where you practice, not just watch: mapping, color theory, machine work on practice skins, and supervised work on live models. Start with one or two in-demand services, like powder brows and lip blush, and add paramedical skills later.

2. Complete bloodborne pathogens training
California regulates permanent makeup as body art. Practitioners need bloodborne pathogens exposure control training, and it has to be kept current. Many PMU courses include it or point you to an approved provider.
3. Register with your county
You register as a body art practitioner with the county where you'll work. In Fresno County, that's the Body Art Program. Its practitioner requirements currently include an application, a registration fee (listed at $52), and photo ID showing you're over 18. Check the county's page for the current list before you apply.
4. Work from a permitted facility
Procedures have to happen in a facility permitted for body art, whether you rent a suite, join a studio, or open your own space. Ask any studio you join whether its permit is current.
5. Build your portfolio and business
- Photograph every healed result. Your portfolio is your best marketing.
- Get liability insurance for permanent makeup.
- Set your prices, booking system and aftercare instructions before you launch.
- Keep learning. Advanced and paramedical techniques set you apart.
How long does it take?
Most artists complete core training in a few days, then spend several months practicing on models and building a portfolio before charging full price. Inked Arch courses run 2 to 4 days, with support after the course.
